FAQ
-
MICODEP is active in Kilifi County, Tana River County and Kwale County - three structurally weak regions in the central coastal area of Kenya.
These areas are among the poorest in the country and are characterized by a serious lack of medical care, educational facilities and economic prospects. It is precisely because state structures are barely effective here that our work is particularly effective and urgently needed.
-
MICODEP is financed by a combination of private donations, foundation funds and public funding.
A large part of our work is made possible by committed private individuals and funding partners from the world of foundations. In addition, we specifically tap into international funding programs - in particular funding from the EU and other development policy funds. This broad funding base ensures the independence and sustainability of our projects and allows us to build long-term structures on the ground.
-
MICODEP differs fundamentally from other NGOs due to its exclusive focus on the Orma - a highly marginalized ethnic group that no other organization has specifically advocated for to date.
The Orma are an ethnic minority with only around 70,000 people worldwide. They live in remote regions of Kenya - often without access to medical care, education or basic state infrastructure. Many do not have official ID cards and are therefore legally invisible. As nomadic migrants, they are increasingly facing existential hardship due to climate change, land conflicts and political neglect. MICODEP is the first and so far only NGO to fill this gap - by providing mobile medical aid, education and structural development on the ground.
-
Yes - absolutely! MICODEP sees itself as a participatory project.
Anyone who would like to get personally involved is very welcome. Whether as a volunteer, to support ongoing projects or with your own expertise - there are many opportunities to actively participate on the ground in Kenya and make a tangible difference.
